Suffolk County police were searching Wednesday for a dark-colored Jeep Wrangler they said struck and killed a Terryville man crossing a street in Port Jefferson Station.

In a news release, police said the "newer model" Wrangler with "Chrome rims," failed to stop Friday night after striking Peter Williams, 47.

At 10:13 p.m. Friday, police said, Williams was crossing Route 112 eastbound, south of Rose Avenue, when the southbound SUV hit him. A second vehicle then hit Williams, police said. That driver remained at the scene.

A physician assistant pronounced Williams dead at the scene.

Detectives, who are continuing to investigate the crash, ask anyone with information to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6553 or call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
