Man critically injured in hit-and-run in Freeport

A hit-and-run driver struck and critically injured a 66-year-old pedestrian crossing a Freeport street on Wednesday, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
The man was crossing Merrick Road when the driver, headed east, struck him, the department wrote in a news release early Thursday.
The man, who was not identified, was listed in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital, according to the release.
No further information — including the cross street and whether there is any suspect — was released.
The crash is being investigated by the police department’s homicide squad, which handles deaths and serious criminal cases in which a victim could die.
