A Kings Park man has been charged with driving drunk and striking a stopped police car on North Broadway in Hicksville Sunday night, police said.

James Petrone, of East Main Street was driving his 2000 Ford truck northbound on North Broadway when he hit the back of a police car with an officer in the driver’s seat at about 10:30 p.m., police said. The officer was engaged in a traffic stop, and the car’s emergency lights were on.

The officer was later taken to a hospital to be treated, police said.

Petrone, 59, was charged with assault in the third degree, driving while intoxicated and failing to move over for an emergency vehicle, police said. He is being held on bail of $7,500 bond or cash set in First District Court in Hempstead, according to online court records.
