A man wearing only a white tank top grabbed and sexually abused a woman jogging in Smithtown Thursday morning, police said.

The woman called police after the 6:40 a.m. assault at Route 111 and Estate Road, according to a Suffolk police release.

The man fled and the woman received medical attention at the scene.

Police sent aviation and K-9 units to assist, a department spokesman said in an email.

Smithtown Councilman Tom Lohmann, a former NYPD officer, said the incident appeared to be an isolated one. "As far as our residents go, they are safe and secure … Suffolk detectives, I’m sure, are doing everything they can do."

In a statement forwarded by a spokeswoman, Smithtown Supervisor Edward Wehrheim said, "I have complete confidence in our law enforcement agencies, that they will apprehend the suspect to be held accountable."

Route 111 is a major north-south road in Smithtown, connecting Main Street to the Smithtown Bypass and Long Island Expressway, and a department spokeswoman said police are looking for commuters who might have witnessed the incident.

Police asked anyone with information to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452 or Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
