A juvenile was arrested after a firearm was discovered at a Baldwin high school, Nassau police said.

Officers responded about noon on Tuesday to Baldwin High School at Schubert on Dermott Avenue following reports that a weapon was seen on the premises, Nassau County Police Department spokeswoman Det. Tracy Cabey told Newsday.

School officials had an "internal investigation" before Nassau authorities arrived, "recovered the weapon and made an arrest," Cabey said in a telephone interview.

"There was no threat to the school or the community," she added.

The police department has not identified the minor due to their age. Cabey did not provide additional information regarding the situation, including whether the weapon was loaded, whether the arrested juvenile is a student of the school and the charges. An investigation into the situation remains underway.

The nontraditional school is described on its website as an "innovative educational experience" for students in grades 9 through 12.
