Ronkonkoma woman facing 'Leandra's Law' charge after crash onto tennis court
A Ronkonkoma woman faces multiple charges after allegedly being intoxicated when she crashed onto a tennis court after dropping off her 10-year-old daughter at a town beach, police said. Credit: James Carbone
The Suffolk police department said a Ronkonkoma woman was intoxicated Tuesday when she dropped her 10-year-old daughter at a town beach before crashing through a nearby fence and onto a tennis court.
Kimberly Shortell, 41, was driving a 2025 Hyundai Sonata about 3:55 p.m. when she stopped at Islip Town Beach in Lake Ronkonkoma to let her daughter out, according to a police news release late Tuesday. She then struck a parked car and continued through the chain-link fence, onto the tennis court and into another fence, said the release, which added: "No one was on the tennis courts at the time of the crash."
Shortell faces charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger less than 15 years old, known as "Leandra’s Law," driving while ability impaired by drugs, and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the release.
Shortell was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries considered nonlife-threatening.
The police said she will be arraigned at a later date at First District Court in Central Islip.
