A 29-year-old Port Washington man was arrested Sunday and charged with, among other things, driving while intoxicated under the Leandra Law, meaning a child under 15 was in the vehicle, Nassau County police said.

At 8:30 p.m. a Third Precinct officer saw Miguel Orellana of Haven Avenue fail to obey a stop sign at Manorhaven Boulevard and Cottonwood Road in Manorhaven, police said.

Orellana’s 14-year-old daughter was in the back seat of the 2005 Toyota Corolla that he was driving, police said.

After stopping the vehicle, the officer “smelled a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and observed that he had glassy bloodshot eyes and slurred speech,” police said.

Orellana was arrested without incident, police said, and his daughter was released to a relative at the scene.

Orellana is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under the Leandra Law, endangering the welfare of a child, driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle in the third degree and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations, police said.

Bail was set at his arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead at $5,000 bond or $2,500 cash.
