BRENTWOOD/Second arrest in pool hall beating

A second man has been arrested in connection with the June 5 killing of a Brentwood man outside a pool hall, homicide detectives said Tuesday.

Jeovani Guzman-Hernandez, 26, of 16 Carlson Ave., Kings Park, was charged with second-degree murder, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Guzman-Hernandez and Jairon A. Gonzales-Martinez, 23, of Brentwood, killed Rumaldo Bethancourt-Lopez, 29, outside the Fiesta Pool Hall on Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood on June 5 at around 1:49 a.m.

Third Precinct officers responded to a 911 call about a fight and found Bethancourt-Lopez dead from head trauma caused by blunt force, police said.

Gonzalez-Martinez was arrested on second-degree murder charges the following day, police said.

Another man was hospitalized with head trauma in the fight, police said.

Guzman-Hernandez pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in Central Islip, said his attorney, Jason Bassett. District Court Judge Toni Dean set bail of $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond.

Bassett said police describe his client as one of five or six men who used pipes and bats to beat two other men outside the Fiesta Pool Hall in Brentwood.

"He denies having any involvement in this whatsoever," Bassett said.

HAMPTON BAYS/Woman, 70, faces DWI charge after crash

A 70-year-old Westhampton woman crashed into a tree in Hampton Bays, suffering facial injuries, then was arrested by police who responded to the scene and charged her with drunken driving, officials said Tuesday.

Southampton Town police said Barbara Cooper was operating her vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

She was charged with DWI.

Police said Cooper crashed at about 10 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Rampasture Road and Elder Avenue. Police said the vehicle ran off the road and hit a tree.

Officers who responded to the scene said Cooper complained of facial injuries caused by the air bags.

She was treated at the scene by volunteers from Hampton Bays Ambulance, then taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where tests revealed Cooper was intoxicated, police said. She was arrested following her release.
