RIVERHEAD/Ex-NYPD cop pleads guilty in wife's shooting
A retired NYPD officer from Amityville has pleaded guilty in a Riverhead court to second-degree attempted murder and a host of lesser charges in the shooting of his estranged wife five times in October 2009. She survived.
Darryl Fowler, 44, is scheduled to be sentenced June 28 -- and is expected to receive 20 years, a spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said Wednesday.
Fowler was facing a maximum sentence of 25 years on the top count, spokesman Robert Clifford said. Fowler pleaded guilty Tuesday, on the day jury selection was to begin in Suffolk Criminal Court in Riverhead.
Fowler served with the NYPD from 1992-98, according to defense attorney Frank Doddato of Garden City, who said Wednesday that he no longer represents Fowler.

RIVERHEAD/Man pleads not guilty to drug charges
The Selden man who has admitted killing two teens in a car crash and dealing drugs pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon to trying to smuggle drugs into the Suffolk County jail.
David Heise, 29, faces 10 1 / 3 to 14 years in prison when he is sentenced for criminally negligent homicide and on drug charges. He had been out on bail even after pleading guilty, but he lost his freedom and a plea deal when he got arrested on a new heroin possession charge last month in Queens.
After he entered the jail, it became apparent that he'd secreted a balloon full of drugs inside his body, said Assistant District Attorney Melissa Turk. He now faces an additional 2 1 / 3 to 7 years in prison for the new charge of promoting prison contraband.
Heise ran a red light in May 2010 and killed Eugene Franjola, 17, of Oakdale, and Stephen Massina, 16, of Sayville.
