Police arrested two men who they said had a loaded handgun in their car in Baldwin early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Nassau County police officers pulled over a 2002 Ford Escort at Grand Avenue and Linden Avenue for a broken license plate light when they noticed a strong scent of marijuana coming from the car just before 4 a.m., police said in a news release.

The driver, Antwon Allen, 30, of Roosevelt consented to a search of the car and the officers found the weapon under the front passenger seat, which was occupied by Michael Mchenry, 30, of Long Beach, police said.

The Escort owner said neither man had permission to use the car, police said.

Both men were charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and criminal possession of a firearm, police said.

Allen faces an additional charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree, police said.

Both men are expected to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday, officials said.
