A Garden City woman was arrested Friday in connection with an injury to a special-needs child that occurred last May.

Alexandra Chmil, 25, of 84 Third St., surrendered to Second Precinct Detectives in Woodbury and was charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a disabled person, a class E felony.

Detectives say a 39-year-old mother of a nonverbal 9-year-old child noticed redness and swelling on her daughter’s face after she arrived home May 2 from Hagedorn Little Village School at 750 Hicksville Rd. in Seaford.

They say the mother saw the girl’s face turn black and blue around her mouth and took her to a physician for evaluation.

On May 11, the mother viewed a video of her daughter in her classroom showing Chmil, a teacher’s aide, violently jerking the little girl’s head “and wiping her face abruptly with paper towels,” authorities said.

According to the felony complaint, Chmil injured the child while attempting to feed her.

Bail for Chmil was set at $25,000. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12.
