Man arrested in fatal Roslyn Heights hit-run crash

An East Hills man was arrested Wednesday and charged in the hit and run death of an 81-year-old Roslyn Heights woman.

Thomas Krauss, 26, of 33 Ground Rd., was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a death, and with leaving the scene of an incident without making a report.

Krauss was the person driving a vehicle that struck Vaghar Giae of Willow Street at Warner Avenue and Carlyle Place Sunday, a few blocks from her home, police said. Giae, who walked with a cane, was thrown at least 75 feet by the impact, and was pronounced dead at the scene, homicide detectives said.

After the initial impact, the vehicle that hit her slowed down, but then fled, police said, also striking a parked car on Warner Avenue as it continued on.

Neighbors said Giae was the dedicated matriarch of her family who cooked weekly Sabbath meals, doted on her family and had recently hosted the Passover seder.
