A Hempstead man has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon after his defaced .45 caliber handgun was found in a car that was stopped by police Saturday night in Roosevelt.
Police said Shakur White, 18, of Terrace Avenue was charged after First Precinct officers on routine patrol shortly before 6 p.m. saw a 2014 black Honda traveling west on Valentine Street and tried to pull it over, but the vehicle continued on before stopping on East Clinton Avenue and Nassau Road.
The occupants of the car were removed by police and the handgun was found inside, police said. An investigation revealed that White, a passenger, was the owner of the gun, police said.
White’s bail was set at $35,000 cash or bond at his arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
