Suffolk hate crimes unit detectives arrested a Riverhead man Wednesday and charged him with damaging the shrine of a church in Mastic Beach four months ago.
Darron Denninger, 25, was arrested at 5 p.m. in connection with the Dec. 15, 2015, vandalism at St. Jude Church, at Neighborhood Road and Hemlock Drive, where glass displays and statues were damaged, police said.
Police said at the time that someone apparently threw an object through the church’s glass doors and that statues of Mary and Joseph were moved, but nothing was taken from the shrine. Detectives conducted an investigation that led to the arrest Wednesday.
Denninger faces a charge of second-degree criminal mischief and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday, police said.
