Remsenburg man jailed after illegally renting home, officials say
The owner of a Remsenburg home that neighbors have complained has hosted loud, late-night parties has been jailed after failing to pay thousands of dollars in fines and violating a court order prohibiting him from renting the property, Southampton Town officials announced Tuesday.
Michael Hurley, 56, who owns 28 Club Lane, was sent to Suffolk County Jail on Sept. 26 to serve a 90-day sentence after he defaulted on paying $15,000 in fines stemming from a 2014 party at the house where a man was seriously injured after attempting to jump into a backyard pool from a second-story window.
Neighbors complained that parties there have lasted late into the night and that the atmosphere was disrupting their peaceful neighborhood, officials said.
“We understand that property owners may want to seek rental revenue benefits from their properties, but they must do so in a way that doesn’t ruin the enjoyment of neighboring properties,” said Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman.
Despite the town revoking Hurley’s rental permit — after he racked up numerous misdemeanor charges for illegally renting the property for less than 14 days — and a permanent injunction New York State Supreme Court since issued prohibiting Hurley from renting his house, town code enforcement investigators said Hurley continued to rent his house “on numerous weekends.”
Hurley paid $27,000 in fines after he was found in contempt of court last year for violating the injunction.
Hurley is due back in court later this year, and faces additional charges for continuing to rent his property this summer without a rental permit.
