Man shot, wounded in Deer Park, Suffolk police say

A Brentwood man trying to break up an argument was shot twice in Deer Park Monday night, and detectives remained at the scene late to gather details on a possible getaway vehicle, authorities said.

The victim, 41, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital and was awaiting surgery early Tuesday morning after being shot twice in the legs, said Det. Sgt. James Murphy of the First Precinct.

He was hanging out with friends outside a Wilson Avenue house when someone came up and confronted another person in the group shortly before 8 p.m., police said.

“He went to be the good guy and break it up,” Murphy said.

As the victim intervened, witnesses told investigators, the shooter fired off about four shots before taking off in a vehicle, Murphy said.

Detectives believe the shooting may be drug-related.

They were trying to track down all the witnesses, most of them residents who scattered for cover, and also get video from businesses on nearby Commack Road, police said.

Witnesses so far were not able to give detailed descriptions of the suspect’s vehicle, police said. “I’m hoping to get that after watching video of him racing away,” Murphy said.

The victim was conscious and in serious but stable condition shortly after midnight, police said. Investigators expect to interview him after the surgery.
