An East Quogue man was seriously injured when he was shot Saturday in the torso by another man after an argument in downtown Riverhead, police said.

Charles Gamble, 35, was involved in a “verbal dispute” with another man in his mid-30s “when one subject brandished a weapon and ended up shooting the other male,” Riverhead Town Police Det. Sgt. Edward Frost said.

Police responded to the scene in front of the Suffolk County Community College Culinary School after a 911 call was made at 3:15 a.m. for shots fired on Main Street, Frost said. The two men had just attended at an event at the Suffolk Theater, Frost said. A post on the theater’s Facebook page lists a Club Night event dubbed “Hip-hop on the East End,” featuring Mister Cee.

Gamble was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center before he was transferred to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

The investigation is ongoing, Frost said. “We’re working on identifying the people involved,” he said.

No arrests had been made as of Saturday night. No further description of the suspect was released.
