A man shot several times Monday rang the doorbell of the North Amityville firehouse to get help, a fire official said.

"He had three bullets in him," said First Assistant Fire Chief John Harley, who arrived just as the victim was being placed in an ambulance.

Suffolk police said they are investigating a shooting that occurred at Bolden Mack Park on Great Neck Road in North Amityville just before 3:15 p.m. That is several blocks from the firehouse at 601 Broadway, which is also Route 110.

Harley said investigators are looking into whether the man was driven to the firehouse because it's unclear how he could have walked there after being shot.

"There's no blood on the sidewalk," the assistant fire chief said.

Two department members were in the firehouse when the injured man shouted, "I've been shot," Harley said.

He had been hit in the leg and the side of his chest, the fire official said.

The man was able to communicate, but needed care by an advanced emergency medical technician, Harley said.

The Amityville Fire Department had one available and sent the EMT to assist the shooting victim, Harley said.

He said the victim was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

He said he did not have other details, such as the name of the victim.

Police said other details were not immediately available.
