A man sleeping in his car in Hempstead early Sunday awoke to find a 9-mm handgun pressed to his head and two men demanding money, police said.

Giovany Antunez, 37, and an accomplice had approached the man, who was parked on Elk Street around 4 a.m., police said.

After the men took the victim's cell phone and $43, police said, a struggle ensued. The victim grabbed the barrel of the gun, and one round discharged into the ground before the victim overpowered Antunez and got control of the weapon, police said.

Antunez and his partner then ran off in different directions, police said.

Police later located Antunez walking on Elk Street. The victim, whose property was recovered, identified Antunez, who was charged with robbery, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon.

He is to be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead. His accomplice was not caught.
