The 46-year-old man who was critically struck on Sunday while crossing a street in Hempstead has died, the Nassau County Police Department said Friday.

The man, Manuel Mendez, had been crossing at Fulton Avenue east of Clinton Street when 34-year-old Alrich Braide of Hempstead — who was driving with a suspended license — hit him at 1:12 a.m with a 2013 Mercedes-Benz SUV, the department wrote in a news release.

Braide, who was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license, was to be arraigned later Sunday, but online court records don’t list his case. He couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The release did not say how fast Braide was driving or why his license had been suspended. Nor did the release say where Mendez lived.

In Nassau County, at least 31 people have been killed by people driving cars, vans, SUVs or trucks, and in Suffolk that number was 42, according to preliminary data for 2021 from the Albany-based Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research.
