A Coram man is facing charges after he allegedly shot a motorist in the leg during an attempted robbery in Selden earlier this month, Suffolk County police said late Tuesday.

Marcus Hunter, 23, was arrested Tuesday evening at the Sixth Precinct in Selden after an investigation and charged with first-degree attempted robbery, second and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree assault.

Sixth Squad detectives said the victim, a 21-year-old man, was sitting in the driver's seat of a parked car on Comet Road in Selden at 10:40 p.m. on July 7 when Hunter allegedly opened the driver's door and pointed a gun at him while demanding his property.

As the victim was getting out of his car, Hunter allegedly shot him in the left leg, police said. After an altercation between the two men, Hunter fled, authorities said.

The victim was treated at an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Hunter will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652.
