Cops: Teen charged in burglary of Mastic Beach home where woman was raped
Suffolk County police said they arrested a 17-year-old male Friday and charged him in the burglary of a Mastic Beach home where a woman was violently attacked and raped in front of her child.
The unidentified teen was charged with first-degree burglary as an adolescent offender, police said. They did not detail the teen’s involvement in the burglary or attack. He appeared Friday in Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip.
Justice Karen Kerr ordered the teen held on $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond, or $400,000 partially secured bond. He is due back in youth court July 7.
Suffolk County prosecutors previously charged a 14-year-old boy with multiple counts including burglary and rape following his arrest April 21, authorities said.
Prosecutors said the two teens broke into the home through a kitchen window April 19 while waiting for another person in the home to drive away.
The teens searched the home for valuables to steal and kicked open a locked bedroom door, prosecutors said. The 14-year-old is charged with sexually assaulting and strangling a 23-year-old woman in front of her 4-year-old daughter while, prosecutors said, the other teen went through the bedroom looking for valuables.
After the rape, prosecutors said, the 14-year-old left the young girl in the bedroom and then dragged her mother to another room where he slashed the woman across the face with a switchblade and stabbed her in the chest, requiring stitches.
The 14-year-old admitted to taking part in the burglary and provided a saliva DNA swab to police, which, prosecutors said, matched the victim.
The 14-year-old was indicted by a grand jury on one count of rape, one count of a criminal sexual act, two counts of assault, two counts of burglary, one count of sexual abuse, one count of strangulation and endangering the welfare of a child.
