Man charged after leaving scene of double fatal crash, cops say

A Mastic Beach man was arrested and charged after fleeing the scene of a crash in Mastic Beach on Saturday night that left two people dead and one injured, Suffolk County police said.

Patrick Poillon, 24, of Mastic Beach, was driving a 2006 Ford Explorer south on Huguenot Drive at 10:11 p.m., when he struck a 2004 Subaru going east on Forest Road West, according to police.

The driver of the Subaru, William Molnar, 50, and his wife, Jean Molnar, 41, a passenger in the front seat, both of Mastic Beach, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police transported a 22-year-old man who was a passenger in the front seat of the Explorer to Stony Brook University Hospital via helicopter to be treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. Poillon fled the scene of the crash on foot, police said, and was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

He is being held at the Seventh Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.

An attorney for Poillon could not be immediately reached.

Suffolk police arrested Poillon in June 2017 and charged him with second-degree criminal trespass, and a temporary order of protection was issued, according to court records.

A few days later, he was charged with driving without a valid license, insurance and registration.

His next court appearance in the 2017 charges is Jan. 15.

Poillon also turned himself in on an outstanding warrant to the Brattleboro Police Department in Vermont in June, that police department said. He was charged with retail theft, assault and robbery, simple assault and aggravated disorderly conduct, Brattleboro police said.
