Police seek man who shot 2 people in Mastic Beach

Suffolk police are searching for a man who shot and wounded two people during an argument on Woodside Road in Mastic Beach Monday.

A group of people were arguing in the street about 10 p.m. when the man drew a handgun and fired several shots at two of the people involved; the shooter then fled, police said.

On Tuesday, police said the shooter "was specifically aiming at the two victims" — and was not shooting randomly into the crowd. A police spokesperson told Newsday: "They were targeted."

While police said the motive for the shooting remained unclear, they did confirm the victims knew each other but it was unclear if they knew the shooter.

The victims, a 25-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, were transported to hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said Tuesday.

At the scene Monday night, police blocked off Woodside Road from Forest Road West to Gooseberry Road. More than half a dozen marked police SUVs and at least one unmarked detectives' vehicle had responded.

Residents of neighboring streets, who declined to identify themselves, reported hearing a series of loud pops that sounded like gunfire, followed by the revving of a motorcycle. Neighbors also reported seeing and hearing a series of ambulances quickly entering and leaving the block that was later marked by yellow police tape.
