A 12-year-old thwarted an alleged burglary of his Medford home after he hid in the backyard and dialed 911, police said.
While inside his Eagle Avenue home on Tuesday, the boy heard the shattering of glass and "someone moving around the house," Suffolk police said in a news release.
The child then "jumped out of his bedroom window" and discovered a man he did not know inside the house, police said. Hiding in the backyard, the kid called the police at 12:50 p.m.
Officers with Suffolk's sixth precinct based in Selden responded to the Medford home and determined that a 53-year-old homeless man allegedly broke a kitchen window and went inside.
The child, who police did not identify, was unharmed, according to the release.
Police arrested and charged the man with third-degree burglary and possession of burglars tools, the department said. He is expected to be held overnight in police custody and arraigned on Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Suffolk police ask anyone with information regarding the alleged burglary to call Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652.
