A masked man brandishing a kitchen knife robbed a Subway shop in Merrick on Friday night, police said.

Nassau County police said the man demanded that a female employee, who was alone in the sandwich shop at 1341 Jerusalem Ave., open the cash register at 9:09 p.m.

The man then fled on foot with an unknown amount of cash, heading west down Jerusalem Avenue, police said. The employee was not hurt.

Nassau detectives said the man was about 6-foot with a medium build and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, a dark mask, sunglasses, black gloves, blue jeans and tan boots.

A Nassau police spokeswoman said officers were exploring whether the theft is connected to a spate of knifepoint robberies this month at Dunkin’ Donuts shops.

Five doughnut shops in the county have been robbed since March 1: two in Plainview and one each in New Hyde Park, Old Bethpage and East Meadow.

Police said those robberies were unrelated to 21 robberies by a knife-wielding man targeting gas stations and convenience stores from Feb. 9, 2015, to mid-January.

Detectives asked that anyone with information about the robbery Friday call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.
