Two men are in custody after Suffolk County police said they were spotted Tuesday taking holiday tips intended for sanitation workers.
Officers responded to Louis Kossuth Avenue in Bohemia at about 10:15 a.m. after a caller reported seeing two men remove an envelope of money that had been placed on a garbage can.
The responding officers found a vehicle nearby that matched the description of the car the caller gave. Police arrested both men inside — Michael Heafy, 50, of 27 Church St., Patchogue, and Christopher Schmidt, 44, of 10 Park Ave., Selden.
Police said Heafy and Schmidt have been charged with petty larceny and officers are looking into whether the pair have taken tips before.
Police are asking anyone who may have been a victim to call the Fifth Precinct Crime Section at 631-854-8526.
