A suspect armed with a handgun and hammer broke into a Mineola supermarket through a skylight Sunday morning and robbed two employees, Nassau police said.

According to police, the unknown suspect entered the Western Beef Supermarket, at 61 Second St., through a roof skylight at about 5:05 a.m.

The suspect then unsuccessfully attempted to break into the store’s office when two employees, men ages 50 and 35, arrived at the supermarket to start their shifts.

Armed with a silver handgun and a hammer, and wearing a ski mask, the suspect robbed the workers of cash and a cellphone and fled through an emergency exit at the back of the store, police said.

No injuries were reported, according to police.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
