More evidence turned over in Carrié Solages domestic violence case

Nassau County Legis. Carrié Solages appeared in a Hempstead court Thursday with a new attorney for a conference in his domestic violence case, where a prosecutor handed over more evidence against the Democratic official to the defense.

Solages, 38, a former Bronx prosecutor who pleaded not guilty after his June 21 arrest, faces misdemeanor charges of assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities have alleged he assaulted his girlfriend, the mother of his 3-year-old son, in their shared Valley Stream home after he flew into a rage when he couldn’t find his stash of marijuana.

Police have said their son was crying as he witnessed the alleged assault, and the girlfriend’s 14-year-old daughter jumped on Solages’ back to try to pull him off her mother after he allegedly grabbed her arm and neck and threw her against a wall.

Nassau District Court Judge Joy Watson said during Solages’ court conference he would need a written agreement or Family Court order to visit his son, who wasn’t named in previous stay-away orders as a protected party but lives with his mother — an alleged victim.

Assistant District Attorney Tara Coughlin told Watson the government previously had given the defense a copy of a 911 call and was handing over paperwork and two videos to the defense Thursday.

Solages’ girlfriend took a cellphone video during the alleged assault, according to court documents.

A video also emerged on Facebook late last month that purports to show Solages yelling and swearing at a woman in a fit of anger while driving a vehicle.

A spokesman for the district attorney’s office declined to comment on that video Thursday, including whether it was part of the case against Solages or potentially could become part of it.

Solages, a lawyer with an Elmont-based practice, left court Thursday without answering reporters’ questions.

His new attorney, Olivier Roche of Hempstead, declined to comment on the court conference or address questions about the Facebook video.

Solages, who represents the 3rd Legislative District and has held his seat for six years, is due back in court Sept. 5.

He previously declared his innocence in the case against him in a Facebook post, and brushed off calls from some fellow elected leaders to resign his elected seat by saying: “I will continue to serve my constituency as I’ve done.”

The county legislature’s Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams (D-Freeport) has expelled Solages from the party’s caucus — meaning he isn’t invited to some meetings and loses access to some staff — and stripped him of legislative committee assignments.

But it’s expected that party leaders won’t replace him as their candidate this fall for the district he represents.
