A suspect in the killing of a North Bellport man shot while standing in front of his home last week has been arrested in Newport News, Virginia, Suffolk County police said.

Shati Smith, 28, was arrested as a "fugitive from justice" in Newport News in a joint operation of Suffolk County homicide detectives, the U.S. Marshals Service and Newport News Police Department, police said.

Smith appeared in court in Newport News on Wednesday, police said, where he declined to waive his right to an extradition hearing on returning to Suffolk.  Police said when he returns to Suffolk County, he will face second-degree murder charges in the June 15 killing of Lee Houpe, 28.

The two men lived several houses from each other on Post Avenue in North Bellport and police said Houpe was killed in front of his residence and his assailant fled in a vehicle.
