Hempstead and Nassau County police are investigating a homicide reported early on the morning of June 9.

Hempstead police responded to a call about a man lying on the ground on Thorne Avenue at approximately 6:50 a.m. and found the body of an unidentified man, Nassau police said in a news release.

A spokesman for Hempstead police said the man had been stabbed.

Nassau police on June 18 identified the man as Mario Aguilar Hernandez, 41, of Hempstead.

There was blood “on his chest and neck,” Victor Rodriguez, a nearby deli grocery store manager who had called police, said at the time.

Rodriguez, who has worked at the corner store at Henry Street and Thorne Avenue for 15 years, said “it’s a pretty quiet street” and he knew all his neighbors but didn’t recognize the man.

Detectives on the scene declined to comment.
