A certified public accountant failed to pay more than $91,000 in personal income taxes during the last five years, Nassau County prosecutors said Wednesday in announcing his arrest.

A joint investigation by the Nassau district attorney and the Department of Taxation and Finance, determined that Steven Ballin, 68, of East Rockaway, had failed to file New York State personal tax returns for tax years 2010 through 2014 and that, after reviewing extensive records, it was determined that Ballin owes $91,901 in taxes.

Ballin was arraigned Tuesday before Nassau District Court Judge Scott Siller in Mineola on four counts of third-degree criminal tax fraud and three counts of repeated failure to file personal income and earnings taxes — both felonies, prosecutors said.

He was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court on May 30. If convicted, he faces 2 1⁄3 to 7 years in prison, according to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas’ office.

Ballin’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

The acting commissioner of the Department of Taxation and Finance, Nonie Manion, said in a statement: “When a certified public accountant blatantly disregards the tax law, it’s a discredit to their profession and their law abiding colleagues.”

Singas added: “Cheating on taxes, as this CPA allegedly did, is a crime that victimizes every honest taxpayer.”

Ballin obtained his CPA license in 1979 and is registered as an accountant through August 2017. His firm, Steven H. Ballin, CPA PC, is in Valley Stream.
