Two men arguing outside a Freeport home Tuesday were arrested after one attempted to kick in the front door and the other fired a shot, Nassau police said.

When Justise Jones, 37, went back inside his Lena Avenue home about 1:45 a.m., Melquawn Abernathy, 25, kicked at the door to get inside, where Jones retrieved his shotgun, police said.

Jones fired one shot at Abernathy, but the bullet hit the ground and ricocheted across the street into the shingles of a home, where a family, including two children, were inside, police said.

No injuries were reported, authorities said.

Responding officers said they saw Abernathy throw a plastic bag containing marijuana on the floor, police said.

Abernathy, of Sharon Lane in Westbury, was charged with second-degree criminal trespass and criminal possession of marijuana, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

Jones was charged with first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
