A Long Beach man was arrested Thursday night in Lynbrook after he punched three Lynbrook police officers at a traffic stop, Nassau County police said.

Stopped in a 2003 Honda for proceeding through a red light at Peninsula Boulevard and Olive Place, Jose Ponce-Castro, 26, “was observed to have glassy bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his person,” Nassau police said Friday in a news release.

Ponce-Castro flailed his arms and, using closed fists, punched three officers who were trying to arrest him, police said. One officer was treated at an area hospital for shoulder pain and shin and forearm lacerations and was later released. The other two officers were not injured.

Ponce-Castro, who was placed under arrest at 7:46 p.m., is being charged with second-degree assault, driving while intoxicated, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, obstruction of government administration, failure to obey a red traffic signal and unlicensed operator.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
