Nassau County police shot a 26-year-old man in the leg Sunday after he threatened the officers with an object that appeared to be a firearm, police said.

Jonathan Parra, 26, of Westbury, was arrested and charged with two counts of second degree menacing and will be arraigned at a later date. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to police, a civilian observed two men trying to open the doors of a Verizon store, at 880 Old Country Rd. in Garden City, and when he approached the men, one of them pointed “what appeared to be a handgun at him.” The individual then drove away and called 911.

Officers responded to the scene at about 2:43 a.m. and located one of the subjects, Parra, in front of 435 B Old Country Rd. in Westbury. As the officers approached Parra, police said he turned and threatened the officers with “what appeared to be a firearm.” The officers discharged their weapons and Parra was struck in the leg, police said. The other male subject fled on foot.

A department spokesman could not say if a firearm was recovered from the scene.

Parra was arrested and officers applied a department issued tourniquet to his leg to control the bleeding, police said. The two officers were taken to a hospital for treatment along with Parra. Their conditions were not released.

The investigation is ongoing.
