An argument between two passengers on a NICE bus Monday in New Hyde Park culminated in a stabbing, with one man arrested after he ran off, Nassau police said.

The incident began around 2 p.m. when Eon Marques, 43, of Elmont, got into a verbal dispute with the 67-year-old victim and put a black-handled six-inch knife to the man's neck, according to charging documents.

Marques then stabbed the victim in the chest, creating a severe laceration, police said.

The bus, heading east on Hillside Avenue near Aster Drive, stopped and Marques fled, while the victim walked to the front of the bus and told the driver of his injury, police said.

Marques, who was arrested a short distance away, near Marcus Avenue and Laurel Drive, later told police that the victim "punched me first. And that's when I pulled out the knife and stabbed him."

Marques was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing and criminal obstruction of breathing/circulation.

Marques was arraigned Wednesday and released on his own recognizance with electronic monitoring.

His Legal Aid Society attorney did not respond to a request for comment.

Marques is due back in court Oct. 15.
