Suffolk County police arrested an Islip woman Sunday who authorities said crashed her car after fleeing from officers who had tried to pull her over for not having working headlights.
Keyanna Hagood, 19, was driving a 1999 Hyundai Elantra east on Sunrise Highway's service road in North Babylon when officers attempted to pull her over at about 7:20 p.m., according to Suffolk County police.
Hagood sped away and crashed a short time later on the service road near Lotus Street. The Elantra had major crash damage when officers found it, police said, but what had happened was unclear. Officers did find a nearby fire hydrant had been mowed down and a guard rail nearby was dented, police said.
Hagood and a passenger in the vehicle, Christopher Bonacorsi, ran off, police said. First Precinct officers located and arrested Hagood and Bonacorsi a short time later in the rear yard of a residence on Freedom Street in North Babylon.
Hagood was charged with third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and third-degree criminal trespass. Bonacorsi, 22, of Shirley, was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal trespass.
The pair was arraigned Monday, with Hagood's bail set at $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond, and Bonacorsi released on his own recognizance, the district attorney's office said. Their attorneys could not be immediately reached Monday night.
