Suffolk police at the scene Wednesday in North Bellport where a man was shot and killed as he stood outside his home, authorities said.

A North Bellport man standing outside his home Wednesday was shot and killed by an assailant who opened fire and drove off, Suffolk police said.

The victim, Lee Houpe, 28, was gunned down about 1:45 p.m. in front of his Post Avenue residence, according to police.

"The male driver of a vehicle" shot Houpe and "fled in an unknown direction," Suffolk police said in a news release.

Houpe was pronounced dead at Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, police said.

Suffolk police did not immediately provide information about the suspect or a description of the vehicle.

Homicide detectives are investigating the killing and ask anyone with information to call the Suffolk homicide squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
