Northport man charged in DWI crash that seriously injures passenger

A Northport man was charged with driving while intoxicated Sunday in connection with an early morning crash in Kings Park that seriously injured his passenger.
Suffolk County police said Michael Powell, 28, was driving a 2002 Subaru westbound on Sunken Meadow Road shortly after 3 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle east of Kohr Road and struck a tree.
Powell’s front-seat passenger, Dennis Clancy, 24, of Kings Park, was taken by Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
Powell was arraigned at Suffolk First District Court Sunday, where he pleaded not guilty, according to court records. A judge ordered bail set at $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash, which had not been posted as of Sunday evening, according to court records. He is scheduled for a future court hearing on Thursday.
Powell’s vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives said anyone who may have witnessed the crash should call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
