A Manhattan man and his mother were shot and wounded by cops Monday after he allegedly held the 49-year-old woman at knifepoint and couldn't be immobilized by a police Taser, said officials.

The suspect and his mother, who police had not identified as of late Monday, were in stable condition at New York Presbyterian Hospital, said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. when cops responded to a 911 call for a domestic dispute with a knife at 408 E. 65th St.

Police encountered the 22-year-old man in a common hallway on the sixth floor of the building holding his mother at knifepoint, said Browne.

When the suspect didn't comply with a police order to drop the knife, a sergeant fired the Taser to no effect, explained Browne.

After the suspect turned with the knife toward police, two uniformed officers fired a total of five shots, three of which hit the man in the torso and groin, said Browne. The man's mother was hit in the buttocks, according to police.

Browne said that it wasn't clear if the Taser malfunctioned or simply did not have the intended affect on the suspect. Police plan to do an investigation to find out what occurred with the device, which temporarily disables a suspect deemed dangerous with an electric jolt.

The cause of the dispute between the mother and her son wasn't know.
