An NYPD officer was in "very grave condition" Sunday after being struck by a motorcycle in Brooklyn during a chase of suspected car thieves, city officials said.

Officer Carlos Olmedo, 31, was listed in critical condition with head injuries at Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, where Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke Sunday.

Olmedo was at 20th Avenue and 84th Street in Bensonhurst around 1 a.m. Sunday when he spotted a suspected stolen car with a group of men inside, authorities said.

Olmedo and his partner started a foot chase of the suspects, who fled from the Toyota Corolla on foot. Olmedo was on 20th Avenue when he was hit by a passing motorcyclist, authorities said.

Three male suspects later detained in connection to the stolen car were being questioned at the 62nd Precinct in Bensonhurst, but have not been charged, police said.

The motorcyclist, who was not involved in the chase, was also hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries. With AP
