Officer discharged weapon in Hempstead traffic stop, cops say

An officer-involved shooting in Hempstead early Monday is under investigation, Nassau police said.

A Hempstead Village police officer opened fire during a traffic stop just after 1:30 a.m. Monday on Harvard Street, said Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun, a Nassau police spokesman.

No arrest was made, Nassau police said.

Citing the Third Squad investigation, LeBrun declined to give other details, including circumstances, number of shots fired and any injuries.

But in a release Tuesday afternoon, detectives from the Third Squad said they were investigating the shooting as “an unusual incident” and said the officer had discharged his service weapon and the driver had fled.

“The subject’s unoccupied vehicle was located on Princeton Street. The investigation is ongoing,” the release said..

Hempstead Village officials and police commanders could not be reached immediately Monday night or did not return calls.
