A Nassau police officer suffered a broken hand while trying to aid someone involved in a fight outside a New Hyde Park bar early Friday morning, officials said.

The Third Precinct officer responded to the Dublin Pub, at 2002 Jericho Tpke., at 2:55 a.m. on a report of an assault. When the officer and a security guard tried to help a man off the ground, the man became combative, police said. A struggle ensued and the officer broke his right hand.

No weapon was used, police said. The officer was taken to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola for surgery. The security guard was not injured.

Jorge Zuluaga, 19, of Elmont, was arrested and charged with assault on a police officer. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead.
