Two people were arrested after police found a stolen handgun in their car in Uniondale early Sunday morning, Nassau County police said.

Police approached a red Toyota parked at Paff Avenue and Elm Place at about 3:05 a.m. with its passenger door open, but police were unable to see anyone inside.

When officers arrived at the car, they discovered Onika Assing, 27, of Hempstead, in the driver's seat, and Jermaine Williams, 38, of Uniondale, in the passenger seat. A silver handgun rested between Williams' legs, police said.

Police and Williams then entered into a violent struggle, as Williams refused to be handcuffed and punched and grabbed at officers, police said.

Williams was taken into custody, and police took the gun -- a loaded .25 caliber handgun reported stolen from North Carolina.

Williams was charged with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest. Assing was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

They are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
