Elmont man charged in assault of Nassau paramedic
An Elmont man has been charged with assaulting a paramedic who responded to his residence Friday morning, Nassau police said.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. Friday, at least one Nassau County police paramedic and at least one Nassau police officer responded to the home of Joseph Reid, 29, of Elmont for an ambulance transport, police said. A Nassau County Police Department spokesperson would not confirm whether Reid made the 911 call himself or elaborate on the nature of the call.
As a police paramedic began assessing Reid, police said the Elmont man "became irate and charged at the police paramedic, pushing him through a door and onto the porch landing outside."
The police paramedic reportedly "suffered severe sharp pain and injury to his left shoulder," according to a Nassau County Police Department news release.
Both Reid and the paramedic were transported to a nearby hospital for assessment and treatment, police said.
Authorities said Reid has been charged with second-degree assault and will be arraigned "when medically practical."
The police spokesperson confirmed Reid was still hospitalized as of 5:30 p.m.
