A pedestrian walking across Route 110 in Melville Friday night was fatally struck by the driver of an SUV who is now charged with driving while intoxicated, Suffolk police said.

The pedestrian was trying to cross the state highway otherwise known as Broadhollow Road about 9:35 p.m., police said in a statement. He was identified Tuesday as Kevin Higgins, 69, who is homeless.

Shane Decamp, 48, of Coram, was driving a 2016 Mazda CX-5 in front of 400 Broadhollow Rd. when he struck Higgins, whose death was pronounced at the site, police said.

Decamp was arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip and released, according to online court records. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.

No further details were issued.
