A 16-year-old male was in critical condition after being shot in the head on Fenimore Avenue in Uniondale on Tuesday night, Nassau County police said.

The unidentified teen was taken to a hospital, and a police spokesman late Wednesday did not have more information on his condition.

Police responded to the scene at 11:27 p.m., after receiving a call for shots fired, according to Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun, commanding officer of the department’s Public Information Office.

When officers arrived they found the victim with a wound to his head, LeBrun said.

The victim was among three or four males standing near Braxton Street when two other males on bicycles rode up to them, LeBrun said.

A verbal exchange ensued, and one of the males on a bicycle shot the teen, LeBrun said.

The two males, between 16 and 18 years old, then rode off on their bikes in an unknown direction, he said.

LeBrun said although the shooting happened near Hofstra University there is no indication either of the groups is connected to the school.

He said Hofstra was increasing its patrols in the area.

A Hofstra spokeswoman on Wednesday morning confirmed the university had stepped up security and issued an alert to students after the shooting.
