Driver arrested after fleeing from trooper, cops say
A Hicksville man was arrested on drug charges Monday after police said he ran away from a State Police trooper while being questioned on the shoulder of the Southern State Parkway.
Andrew Alagna, 21, was in a Nissan stopped on the westbound Southern State near the Bethpage Parkway exit in South Farmingdale at about 2 p.m. when a trooper on patrol approached him, State Police said.
“While interviewing the operator . . . the trooper noticed hypodermic needles near the vehicle,” police said Tuesday in a news release. “Mr. Alagna ran from the trooper and into the woods.”
Police said troopers caught Alagna a short time later in the area of Woodward Parkway and 11th Avenue in South Farmingdale.
The suspect “began vomiting violently” after being taken into custody and was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bethpage by the South Farmingdale Fire Department, police said.
“A search of the vehicle yielded a small amount of heroin,” police said.
Alagna was charged with driving while impaired by drugs, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and resisting arrest. His case will be handled in Nassau First District Court.
