Police: Leandra’s Law charge for LIE driver

A Hampton Bays woman was arrested under Leandra’s Law Tuesday evening after driving drunk on the LIE with a 12-year-old passenger, police said.

Melissa Donelan, 39, was driving an Acura MDX east on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 71 in Calverton when detectives in an unmarked car spotted Donelan “failing to maintain a lane of travel,” Suffolk County police said Wednesday in a news release.

Computer Crimes Unit Dets. Rory Forrestal and Anthony Gigliotti called for a marked unit and followed Donelan as she exited at Edwards Avenue, police said. Donelan, on her own, then stopped her car on the shoulder at 5:50 p.m., and the detectives approached her, police said.

Donelan was arrested and charged under Leandra’s Law with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger and child endangerment. She was held for arraignment Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Police declined to disclose the relationship between the 12-year-old and the driver.

Leandra’s Law is named for Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in an October 2009 DWI crash in which the car she was in, driven by the mother of a friend, overturned on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan.
