A man was shot in the leg at a car wash across the street from Hempstead High School on Wednesday afternoon, Hempstead Village police said.

The shot was fired about 2 p.m. during a fight and attempted robbery outside the Jet car wash on Peninsula Boulevard, police said.

The school was not put on lockdown, police said.

Police said the gunman fled. The victim, a customer at the car wash, was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Nassau County police detectives are investigating.
